Have Your Cake and Eat it Too!

Recently I have been researching a lot of wedding cake trends for this spring and I absolutely love what I have found!

Brides are moving away from the traditional three-tier, white iced wedding cake and moving toward more trendy alternatives.  From cupcakes to candy bars, and everything in between brides can now have their own personal dessert selection.

The first alternative that is growing more and more popular is the cupcake “cake”.  Although it may be a bit more expensive than the traditional cake, I definitely think that it is worth the money.  Brides can now pick and choose a variety of flavors and designs to satisfy their guests and fit their own tastes.  I really love this idea because it is so fun and yet beautiful at the same time– plus, who doesn’t love cupcakes?

Another upcoming trend is the candy bar.  Everyone loves candy, and everyone has their favorites, so why not go all out and have a custom candy bar for your guests?  I love this idea because it truly is a custom wedding feature.  You can choose whatever candies you want and even have them personalized with designs or monograms!  A friend of mine recently mentioned Amy Atlas events which focuses on personalization for the bride and groom.  Below are some pictures of the firm’s work that show just how fun and creative you can get with this idea.

Also along the same line is the wedding dessert table where brides combine cupcakes, candies, cookies, etc. to form their ideal selection of sweets.  Now, I know I have said that I really like the previous two ideas, but I also think this is great.  Brides and grooms should be allowed to mix and match whatever desserts they want.  If you’re going for a particular theme, the cupcakes or candy bar might be more fitting however for some receptions the dessert table is perfect!  Just like the cupcake tower and candy bar, the dessert table can also include a lot of personal touches.

Some other fun trends for this spring include:

  • Spring Flavors: strawberry filling, lemon cake, or even a chocolate cake with a fruit element such as cherry– don’t be afraid to spice up some of the classics with a spring vibe

  • Seasonal Colors: try to include vibrant colors that make your desserts even more irresistible– for a more bold look I would  suggest sunshine yellow, lime green, and bright pinks; for a more subtle spring feel try to include some lighter pinks, purples and blues (you don’t want it have too many pastel shades but mixing these tones with white or cream can be very effective when trying to achieve a spring look!)

  • Flowers: flowers are perfect for the spring season– it is a great idea to make your desserts feel as much like spring as possible; I really love the idea of adding fresh flowers to your wedding cake or even incorporating a spring floral design in other desserts

  • Finally, the concept of adding other spring elements into your cake design or dessert table: butterflies, rain drops and other elements can be made out of fondant, chocolate or gum paste and added into the sweets for your special day

These are only a few of the trends that are on the rise in the bridal world.  Don’t feel bound by what others are doing, but be creative.  Take an idea and make it yours!

  1. This is really neat. My mom is making cupcakes for the dessert at my cousins wedding, but I hadn’t heard of people doing stuff like that before.

  5. I also like the part about ensuring that you have some “spring themed” flavors. I definitely appreciate the flavor of lemon more on a mild spring day than in the middle of winter, for example.

  9. Wow, I love the cupcake idea! They look delicious. Also, I would love to go to a wedding that had a candy bar, especially if they had rock candy like in the picture.

  10. These alternatives to a traditional wedding cake are really cute! I’m not sure I’d like to have them at my wedding, but that’s probably because I love traditions.

  11. I’ve had cupcakes at a wedding, and they are definitely preferable to a piece of wedding cake. They’re so moist and you don’t have to share!
